How to Laminate a Skateboard Deck

Skateboarding is a sport that will trigger a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction once that trick is landed or a new skill was learned. You will learn a lot of lessons from it when you put your mind and heart into it. It will teach you to get up after falling down and practice you to learn from your mistakes as you over and over try a trick and learn the physics behind it to perfectly execute.

As the demand for quality skateboards gained its push in the skateboarding industry, it has become a must to skateboard manufacturers to create a board that will last longer and will relay a crisp feels. Laminating the skateboard all the way to its outside or external part promotes a more durable skateboard and a reliable toy for bigger and harder tricks. Laminating the skateboard will prolong the life of the board, and it will prevent it from breaking easily.

As skaters multiply, the demand for skateboards also went along with it. Hence, local shops are banking onto making their own skateboards to suffice the demand whilst selling skateboards that are made for skaters. Skaters who own their own skate shop passionately create a design out of all the knowledge they acquired for years of skateboarding. They know the technicalities of skating and what certain shapes best fit for a certain skating style.

Making skateboards is a process that needs precision and passion. It is the only way to create a skateboard that will cater to the demands and needs of the skaters. Through time the style and materials changed, and skateboard laminates became popular. To enlighten you more, here is the basic knowledge in laminating skateboards.

Materials for Skateboards

Typically, the most common material used in making skateboards is glue and durable wood. It is shaped by using a press that is designed with the intended shape. Although there are skateboards that are made of other materials such as aluminum, composites, Plexiglas, fiberglass, foam, composites, and other artificial materials, wood is the most common. Some are decorated screen printing or laminates that are printed with various designs.

Trucks, on the other hand, are usually made of aluminum, steel, brass, and alloy. Some are strangely made with nylon, which is not very reliable and durable.

The Design

The skateboard design plays a big factor in terms of creating a skateboard. The length of the nose and the tail greatly matters. Also, the width and the length of the skateboard also adds a lot of influence in the ride. Thus, the design is the first and foremost brewed before anything else.

The Process of Making a Skateboard

Creating a skateboard is a technical job that needs an ample amount of precision. Every step is crucial in terms of producing a durable and reliable one far from breaking. It is also vital to keep the temperature balanced and the wood far from wet areas to avoid warping.

  1. Typically, the most common type of wood used is maple. Maple is known to have the flexibility and durability perfect for skateboards. Since skateboarding is a sport that is based on balance, a flexible but durable board is a perfect combination. Hence, the first step is to choose an ideal kind of wood.
  2. After choosing the wood, some may put some veneer laminates to add a little bit of protection and prolong its lifetime. Usually, laminates or veneers are glued using water-based glue.
  3. After coating the veneer, they are typically numbered and labeled in accordance with the kind of style based on its intended shape. Some are best for tricks, as such are smaller and crisper. Some are for bowl riders, a bit wide and flexible, and among others.
  4. There are several layers every skateboard is made of. Basically, the nose to tail has grains running all the way from each of the first, second, fourth, sixth, and seventh layers. This simply shows the durability and the craftsmanship put in to ensure quality. The third and the fifth layer, on the other hand, goes all the way to the side to balance everything.
  5. After arranging such, they are placed into a mold, called a press. A press is designed according to the intended shape the manufacturer wants to create. Basically, the press is a machine that puts together every piece in one shape. The press is the one responsible for creating the nose, concave, the tail, and the other curves essential for popping and doing other tricks.

Tips on Using SKateboard Press for Molding

  • Typically, each press can easily create 15 decks, though, as to some may vary depending on the size of the press. Just leave your decks inside the press for 24 hours and wait for them to dry. It has to be fully dried before re-shaping and selling them. The longer you give your decks to dry, the more set and reliable it will be.
  • After shaping the wood, they are taken out of the press and should pin eight holes for the trucks using a hand drill. It has to be in a standard size and shape so that all kinds of trucks can fit in it.
  • It will then be followed by re-shaping the wood according to the intended length and width. After, it is important to sand the edge down and seal it with a sealant or paint.
  • Lastly, when the whole process is done, the skateboards are either packaged, displayed, or shipped someplace for selling. Some are being painted or customized for a brand or a certain design that the client wants. Most skateboards that have generic brands typically have the same design but seen in different brands.

As for skateboards, which are owned by an actual skateboarder or run by a skateboarder, they create their own skateboard and customize the look of it according to their brand image.

Skateboarding has now become a part of the accepted sport in the world. It earned its part in the Olympics, and it drastically penetrated the cultures of the world. Hence, it is likely for it to reach commercialization in due time.
