It might be a little issue for some, and many skateboarders don’t mind the importance of cleaning their grip tape. Well, as your skateboard has already been part of your day to day life, it is also now a part of your personal stuff.
Clean grip tape is a must. Aside from aesthetic reasons, a dirty grip tape might affect your tricks. This is why, when it gets dirty, cleaning is a must, and for worst, you need to replace a new one. For this reason, to avoid excessive buying of grip tape, keeping it clean all the time will help you save some penny as well as time and effort.
How can I get rid of dirty grip tape?
How will you clean your grip tape depends on what type of dirt it has. A dirtier grip tape requires more effort, while simple ones might only take a few seconds or minutes to get cleaned.
Cleaning your grip tape in an easy way
The use of a grip tape eraser is one of the easiest yet effective ways to clean your grip tape. Grip tape eraser is just a piece of rubber-like material. You can see a lot of brands in the market; just make sure to choose the one with good quality. Another choice you can use is the belt sander cleaner and free terry clothes.
All of these products are effective enough to clean off dust from your grip tape but not with mud. Using these products is just a simple task. What you need to do is to wipe off the rubber particles. You can use the small corner of the grip tape eraser to clean the smaller area of your grip tape. You can push the grip tape eraser lightly for a cleaner performance.
Cleaning dirtier grip tape
As dust is easy to get rid of, dirtier grip tape must also require other methods and more effort from you. For example, getting off dried mud from your grip tape needs water and other cleaning materials for effective removal. How to do it? Here’s what you can do.
Before heading off to the actual cleaning process, make sure to cover the edges of your grip tape to protect it in soaking with water. Use duct tape, electrical tape, scotch tape, or packing tape as all of these helps to protect your decks from getting soaked with water. (When the tape leaves residues, use sandpaper to get rid of it instead).
Apply the cleaning product to the grip tape indirectly. Instead of direct application, use sponge, spray bottle, or towel. Note: Avoid directly applying the water to avoid the edges getting soaked. You can use the following products:
- Soapy water – this might be the basic cleaning material you can use, but most likely, your grip tape might also get soaked.
- Glass cleaners/green cleaners – these two works well. Just make sure to use a spray bottle.
- Orange cleaners – also come with a spray bottle; the orange cleaner used for dusty furniture is also a good option.
Aside from using a spray bottle, you can also use a sponge to apply the cleaning product properly. Patting and dabbing are both good options for this application since scrubbing it directly might wear out the grip tape.
When you’re done applying the cleaning material, you may now scrub the dirt with the use of an old toothbrush with soft bristles. When towels and sponge don’t work well, the use of a toothbrush is a good option.
- Use a towel or paper towel to dab the dirt and clean it off.
- You may repeat the process if the dirt is not fully getting rid of.
While it is easy to clean your dirty grip tape, keeping it clean all the time should not be an option to all skaters but a responsibility. Nothing is as good as using a skateboard with clean grip tape.
